Calls grow for sex text MP to go
ANDREW GRIFFITHS WAS APPOINTED MINISTER AMID CLAIMS OF BULLYING AND ‘INAPPROPRIATE TOUCHING’ – OF WHICH HE WAS LATER CLEARED SECOND PROTEST AT TOWN HALL IS PLANNED BY UNION GROUP
A SECOND protest is being organised calling on Andrew Griffiths to resign as Burton’s MP over revelations he sent 2,000 vile text messages to two women in his constituency.
East Staffordshire Trades Union Council says it is “horrified” at scandal and has joined the growing number of people urging the MP to step down after it was revealed by the Sunday Mirror that the married father-of-one admitted to bombarding the women with the sleazy messages.
The sex texts, many of which are too disgusting to print, asked for the women to beat each other, while Mr Griffiths, 47, referred to himself as “daddy” throughout the two-week period in which the messages were sent.
He also referred to the women, barmaid Imogen Treharne, 28 (right), and a friend, who has not been named, as the t**ty twins. The Tory MP promised the pair money for racy images and described rough
sex he claimed to have had with other women.
Mr Griffiths has apologised, saying he was “deeply ashamed at my behaviour” and that he is now seeking treatment.
While he has resigned as Minister for Small Businesses – a role he was given only in January – he has
refused to quit as Burton’s MP.
Many of his constituents say they no longer feel he can represent Burton sufficiently and now a demonstration has been organised calling for the MP to resign. Marchers will also be calling for rights for women and an end to discrimination, an end to austerity and a new deal for
working people, a spokesman said.
The protest is set to take place at noon on Saturday, July 28, outside Burton Town Hall. Another protest is being organised by Jessica Eaton, an international expert on the forensic psychology of sexual violence, but no date has yet been decided.
William Walker, secretary of East Staffordshire Trades Union Council, said: “We are totally disgusted at the actions of the town’s MP and we send our thoughts to his wife and family and this difficult time.
“We are horrified that anyone can treat women in such an abhorrent way and we will be calling for equality for women and an end to discrimination of all kinds.”
He added: “Burton has fast become a town of low wages and zero hour contracts where people are using food banks because they can not afford to make ends meet.
“He has also supported austerity measures such as the bedroom tax, a cruel and callous tax on some of our most vulnerable.
“This is a demonstration not just about Andrew Griffiths and his vile actions but the need to change course from the actions of him and his Government in Parliament.”
