McCrory hoping for upturn in Brewers’ Cup luck

DAMIEN McCrory thinks Scunthorpe United’s recent struggles in League One will have no bearing on tomorrow’s FA Cup clash with Burton Albion.

While the Brewers have won three of their last five matches in the League, third-tier rivals Scunthorpe had lost five on the bounce before they battled back from 3-0 down at home to Oxford United to draw 3-3 last time out.

That run has seen the Iron drop from 10th after a goalless draw at the Pirelli Stadium on September

30 to 19th heading into this weekend’s break for the FA Cup.

McCrory feels that will matter little when Albion face Stuart McCall’s side, although the Brewers’ primary focus is on maintaining their own performance levels.

“I think they had had five defeats in a row before Saturday,” said the Burton defender.

“But I don’t think that matters in the FA Cup.

“The FA Cup is just a different ball game altogether.

“We’ll be going in there to play our own game.

“We won’t be concentrating on them too much, we’ll just play our own game and want to progress into the second round.”

It has been nearly five years since the Brewers last won a game in the competition and the long-serving McCrory was part of the side that beat Fleetwood Town in a second round replay. Now, with an impressive run to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals under their belts, can Albion make progress in the world’s oldest football competition?

“It’s a great competition. Sadly, since I’ve been here, we haven’t had too much luck in the FA Cup, to be honest,” said McCrory.

“But it would be nice to have a Cup run. It’s one of the best cups around, history-wise and it’d be nice to progress and go into the third round and progress even further than that. “Obviously, everyone thinks about getting to the third round and then anything goes from there. “Let the big boys from the Premier League come in and you never know, with luck, we might get a big team away or at home. “Obviously, you can see our run in the other cup, where we now have Middlesbrough away.

“But it’d be nice to progress in another cup and get a big team in it.”

It’s a great competition. Sadly, since I’ve been here, we haven’t had much luck in it.
