Finishing touches hailed

Afterwards he spoke about mentality and mindset.

“Aston Villa was an off-day for us, and we lost but you have to see the big picture,” said Lampard.

“I think everyone in this league is going to have those games because it is so competitive, so close, and the important thing is reaction.

“After the international break is not easy. It’s not easy to get everyone’s minds back, players have been away and players have had days off with their families.

“That was the message before (the game) to try and start this new run of games well.

“Without being at our best the three points was very nice.

“There are very fine lines between teams. It is competitive, there are different styles of play and teams don’t give up.

“No matter where you go, no matter what the points difference is in the table, you have to be worried about yourself and getting yourself right to have a chance to win.” FRANK Lampard saluted the quality of finishing in Derby County’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

Derby trailed to Adam Reach’s early goal when Harry Wilson equalised after 29 minutes with a fine volley, his fifth goal of the season.

Jack Marriott then hit what proved to be Derby’s winner six minutes later.

Marriott is top scorer on seven goals and all of them have come in his last 11 games.

“They were both very well-taken goals,” said Lampard after the win at Hillsborough.

“Harry’s one, the ball bounced up and so it was a good technique, which we know Harry’s got.

“It is not easy to hit those but it was a clean strike.

“It was also important for us because it gave us confidence.

“Jack’s ended up clean through and it was great work from Florian Jozefzoon, who was bright.

“Jack took it early on his left foot which isn’t his better foot, which you might say shows where he is at, a sign of his confidence.

“When I saw he was taking it on (into the area) I thought ‘take another touch and get closer to the keeper and get it back on your right’. To see him confident and taking things on like that makes me happy.

“He practises a lot, he works hard in training, he is hungry to score goals.”
