Scammers are posing as police

DETECTIVES are warning people in Derbyshire to be on the alert against a scam which has seen vulnerable victims shell out more than £20,000 to confidence tricksters posing as police officers.

Derbyshire Police say three victims have already come forward about the scam, which saw one person hand over £16,000 to scammers.

The con artists, posing as police officers, told the victims they had been a victim of fraud and needed help to track down those responsible, and asked them to withdraw cash.

Detective Inspector Debbie King said: “Each of our victims thought they were doing their civic duty and helping a police officer catch a fraudster – the reality is much different.

“I would urge anyone who has been approached by these criminals to contact us on 101 immediately and not to engage with them.”
