Garden seat tribute to club’s founders
A GARDEN seat has been bought in memory of the founders of a church luncheon club to mark its 30th anniversary.
The seat has been placed outside the church hall in the grounds facing St George and St Mary’s Church, Church Gresley, in memory of Ray and Joan Smith, who set up the St George’s Luncheon Club in 1988.
After a refurbishment of the church hall, Ray and Joan decided to set up a day centre for the elderly of the community to offer fellowship and a hot meal, and this has continued on a weekly basis. A spokesman for the club said: “It is hard to imagine how many people have enjoyed this fellowship over the years.”
As part of the celebrations members, helpers and friends enjoyed an afternoon tea and were entertained by the Sing4Pleasure group, led by Claire Harvey-East. The club has also donated towards a defibrillator now installed outside the church hall.
