Pompey clear after eighth win in a row

PORTSMOUTH extended their lead at the top of League One to six points with a 2-0 win at home over Southend United.

Both goals came in the first half an hour, Michael Turner’s own goal followed by Jamal Lowe’s effort as Pompey made it eight victories in a row in all competitio­ns.

Sunderland dropped to third after their match at Accrington was abandoned deep into the second half because of a waterlogge­d pitch. The sides were level 1-1 after Connor Hall cancelled out Chris Maguire’s opener, a goal scored in similar circumstan­ces to Liam Boyce’s for Burton, as the former Derby County striker charged down former Burton loan keeper Connor Ripley’s clearance.

Luton Town moved into second place with a 2-0 victory over Fleetwood Town.

Harry Cornick scored the first in the 11th minute and a Craig Morgan own goal 10 minutes from the end settled it.

United stay fourth after James Henry scored a late penalty to earn Oxford United a 2-2 draw at London Road.

Ivan Toney opened the scoring for Posh in the 10th minute but Henry equalised three minutes before the break. Siriki Dembele then struck what looked like being the winner 15 minutes from time only for Ryan Tafazolli to bring down Gavin Whyte.

The big losers in the top six were Barnsley, who went down 1-0 away to in-form Wycombe Wanderers thanks to Randell Williams’ goal 10 minutes after half-time. Wanderers have now won six consecutiv­e League matches at Adams Park.

Doncaster Rovers’ 4-0 away victory against Bristol Rovers propelled them into the play-off places.

John Marquis set Rovers on their way in the 10th minute and Mallik Wilks marked his return to the starting line-up with a brace either side of Tom Anderson’s third.

Doncaster overtook Charlton Athletic, who were beaten 2-1 by Blackpool. Joe Aribo cancelled out Armand Gnanduille­t’s early goal but Nathan Delfouneso grabbed the winner in the 87th minute.

Bottom side Bradford City led three times against fellow strugglers Plymouth Argyle but were pegged back each time in a 3-3 draw.

Jack Payne (2) and George Miller scored for Bradford but Freddie Ladapo (2) and Joel Grant responded.

Wimbledon stayed ahead of Bradford on goal difference after a 1-1 draw with Rochdale. Calvin Andrew gave Dale the lead but Andy Barcham equalised in the 70th minute.

A dramatic finish at the Bescot Stadium saw Walsall hit back from a goal down to Coventry City, Luke Leahy scoring twice in stoppage time, the second from the penalty spot, to give them a 2-1 win.

Gillingham pulled away from the bottom four with a 2-0 win away to Scunthorpe United. Tom Eaves and Dean Parrett scored within three minutes of each other in the second half.
