BURTON Albion are set for a World Cup pay-off – thanks to former Brewer Jackson Irvine

Irvine, who left Albion in a club record deal to join Hull City in August 2017, was part of Australia’s squad at the 2018 finals in Russia, making three appearances as the Socceroos went out in the group stages.

FIFA rules state that clubs are compensated for their players appearing at the tournament, receiving the amount of $8,530 (£6,738 at current exchange rates) per player per day of their involvement at the World Cup finals.

The total per player is then divided among the clubs with whom that individual was registered in the previous two years, provided the clubs have filled out the relevant application form.

According to figures which have been worked out by national newspaper The Times, that means Albion are set for a windfall of around £77,000.

The Brewers are yet to receive that payment, which is likely to be due in the new year, and the exact amount will depend on exchange rates at the time.

“We were made aware some time ago that FIFA were proposing to make payments to clubs whose players had appeared at the World Cup,” said Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson.

“We were pleasantly surprised to learn the sum could be quite significant and we look forward to receiving it.”

The Times reports that Manchester City will receive the biggest amount, at around £3.9m, with Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain next in the list.

They also state that Albion’s thirdtier rivals Sunderland will get approximately £531,983.

Australian international Irvine scored 11 goals in 49 appearances for the Brewers, playing a key role in their Championship survival in 2016-17 before joining the Tigers last summer.

He has since made 56 outings for the KCOM Stadium side, who are currently three points clear of the second-tier relegation zone.
