Sympathy for Rowett

-

DERBY County boss Frank Lampard says it was a shame to see former Rams manager Gary Rowett lose his job with Stoke City.

Rowett was sacked on Tuesday after only eight months at the helm, having left Derby in May to take charge at Stoke.

Stoke were among the pre-season favourites for promotion following relegation from the Premier League but Rowett has left them 14th, eight points away from the top six.

They won eight of their 26 League games during his time at the club.

Asked for his thoughts on Rowett’s dismissal, Lampard who took over from Rowett at Derby - said: “It is a shame.

“I am in this role now and I understand the difficulties of it. On that side I feel sorry because someone losing their job is difficult. I wish him the best.”

Stoke have appointed Luton Town boss Nathan Jones as their new manager. The 45-year-old guided the Hatters to promotion from League Two last season.

On the appointment of Jones, Lampard said: “In terms of the appointment, I think it is a brave one and a refreshing one to see a young manager get a chance.

“He has worked in leagues below, so I think that is a positive for them.”

Lampard then smiled and said: “Obviously, I hope they (Stoke) stay below us in the table!

“Stoke have made the decision and they move on. My concern is Derby.”
