9-0...AND IT’S STILL ONLY HALF-TIME!

ALBION SUPPORTERS SING THROUGHOUT 9-0 DEFEAT – EVEN TAKING CHEEKY DIG AT PREMIER LEAGUE WINNERS

BURTON Albion fans sung throughout the night in their historic Carabao Cup tie against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

A flurry of four first-half goals set City on their way to a thumping 9-0 victory in the first leg of the semifinal but Brewers fans certainly were certainly not deflated.

The roughly 3,000 away fans came to life as Burton Albion stalwart Lucas Akins had a shot with less than 30 seconds on the clock.

Songs of “come on you Brewers” could be heard throughout the evening, mixed in with tongue-in-cheek chants like “League Two champions, you’ll never sing that”.

The Burton supporters are well adjusted to weekly journeys to grounds with capacities of no more than 10,000 but sat in the more than 55,000-capacity Manchester stadium to watch Nigel Clough and his men.

There were concerns prior to kickoff that many fans would miss the start of proceedings due to incidents on both the A38 and M6, however all of the 28 coaches travelling from Burton had arrived by shortly after, if not before, the start.

One supporter, Paul Whitley, arrived well before kick-off and was excited for the game.

He said: “I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. As long as we score, I’ll take it. Make it difficult for them at the Pirelli.”

Fellow Brewers fan, Phillip Dennis was at the Etihad with his family, Marie Dennis and Simon, Karla and Ethan Daykin.

He was hoping for a “respectful” result.

Burton have defied all the odds so far this season in the Carabao Cup, securing their first semi-final appearance, where they entered the draw alongside Premier League giants Chelsea, Tottenham and City.

In their history-making run, the Brewers knocked out Shrewsbury Town, Aston Villa, Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough to set up this two-legged tie with Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Brewers will welcome City back to the Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday, January 23.
