THE RSPCA is investigating reports that a dog was deliberately drowned after its body was found tied up in a sack and sheet and dumped in a canal.

The horrifying discovery was made by a passer-by who saw part of the dog’s body floating with a yellow sack tied around his body in the Trent and Mersey Canal at Stenson, near to the Ragley Boat Stop pub, in Deepdale Lane.

Inspector Sarah Burrows was sent to the scene and with assistance was able to drag the dog, believed to be an akita or husky type, from the water.

Once the body was out of the water she was able to clearly see the body was entangled in a sheet, a builder’s-type sack and a black bag. She said: “We don’t know for sure if the dog was dead or alive when it was dumped in the canal.

“If the dog was alive then it is cruel beyond belief and the poor dog would have been terrified.

“It is so upsetting to even imagine how much suffering it endured and it was so unnecessary. “The dog was not microchipped so I am appealing for anyone who knows who owned the dog to get in touch.”

Anyone with information about the incident should contact the RSPCA appeals line on 0300 123 8018.
