A STAFFORDSHIRE MP has called for a new passenger line between Burton and Lichfield to improve travel links between the East and West Midlands.

Michael Fabricant, Conservative MP for Lichfield, stood during Prime Minister’s Questions in a bid to gain support for a passenger service between the two centres. The rail line is currently used only for freight trains.

During his question he said: “Transport is also the key to employment. I want to raise the question of the rail line which lies between Lichfield and Burton and is currently only used for freight.

“It passes the Royal Memorial Arboretum, which gets about half a million visitors a year but they have to visit by road on the busy and congested A38.

“So can I ask the Prime Minister that this rail line be upgraded to a passenger service providing a valuable east-west connection from Birmingham?”

In response, Theresa May said she “knew the importance” of rail travel but it was for “local authorities and local enterprise partnerships” to discuss the demand needed for a rail line.

Commenting afterwards, Mr Fabricant added: “Stations

could be added to serve Alrewas and the National Memorial Arboretum, Fradley and Barton under Needwood.

“They would provide a direct connection with Birmingham and beyond on the cross-city line. It would transform people’s lives as commuters to Birmingham from as far afield as Derby will no longer need to use the congested A38.

“I have already discussed this matter with Chris Grayling, the Transport Secretary, and with Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde, the managing director of West Midlands Trains.

“I now hope that the Metro Mayor of the West Midlands, the local enterprise partnerships, and Midland Connect will all work together with local authorities to see this much needed upgrade happen.”

A spokesperson for Staffordshire County Council said it would “support an investigation” into such a scheme.

It said: “Staffordshire’s transport links are essential to a vibrant and growing economy and the county council is involved in a number of major infrastructure projects.

“We fully support the investigation into any viable transport scheme which will further boost the county’s economy and improve the lives of residents”.
