Former teacher charged with sex offences
MAN TO FACE COURT OVER ALLEGATIONS OF INDECENTLY ASSAULTING TWO FEMALE PUPILS UNDER THE AGE OF 16 AT TOP PUBLIC SCHOOL IN THE 1980S
A FORMER teacher at a Derbyshire public school has been charged with sex offences against pupils.
Derbyshire police confirmed the force has charged 53-year-old Simon Clague with a number of counts of indecent assault.
The offences are alleged to have taken place in the 1980s at £11,000-perterm Repton School, where Clague taught hockey and maths.
Both of his alleged victims were pupils there at the time.
It is understood that Clague still works at the school, but not as a teacher.
A force spokeswoman said: “Simon Clague, 53, of Willington Road, Repton, was recently charged with allegedly indecently assaulting two girls under the age of 16 dating back to the 1980s.
“He is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Monday, April 15.”
Repton School is an independent fee-paying school which caters for boarding and non-boarding pupils.
Former pupils at the school include Jeremy Clarkson and the author Roald Dahl.
According to its website, fees for boarding at the school for the 2017-18 term were £11,569 per term. For day pupils it was £8,582 per term.
A spokesperson for Repton School said last night: “We can confirm a member of staff has been charged with non-recent sexual offences. As criminal proceedings are active, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.”
It is the second incident in the past seven days to hit the school. On Tuesday, the Burton Mail reported how the school’s current hockey and sports development teacher Martin Jones had been convicted of drink-driving.
Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court was told how the 38-year-old blew a reading which was three times the legal limit when he “darted off” from police and into the school grounds, in Willington Road, on March 3.
Jones, of High Street, Repton, was spotted mounting a pavement, followed by police and stopped.
He pleaded guilty to one count of drink-driving and was fined £710.
Magistrates also ordered him to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £71 victim surcharge.
The former England and Great Britain international hockey player was also disqualified from driving for 20 months.
