A MUM has thanked passers-by who rescued her and her young son from the wreckage of their car after it flipped on to its roof in an accident.

Gemma Johnson said her son, Brandon, three, was “petrified” after he was left hanging by his seatbelt upside down in the car when the crash happened on a residential street in Burton.

Mrs Johnson now wants to thank all those who rushed to the scene in Calais Road, Horninglow, to rescue the pair.

She said: “Someone was looking down on us that day. If another car had come in the opposite direction we wouldn’t be here today.”

The Nissan Pixo driven by Mrs Johnson, 38, was involved in a collision with a red Audi at around noon on Wednesday.

Miraculously, she escaped with just minor cuts and Brandon was not injured.

The fitness instructor, from Uttoxeter, said: “I was just going to drop my son off at his dad’s flat nearby.

“In my peripheral vision I could see this red object coming towards us. I didn’t have time to react.

“I was aware the car was rolling but it was all a blur.

“I was okay but my son was petrified. I could see his arms and legs hanging in the air.

“For the last three or four days my son was looking at and asking about the warning picture on the seatbelt, warning people to wear one.

“It was like someone was telling us.”

“I was thinking of my son at the time of the accident and just saying, ‘please God be okay’.

“I was just praying another car wasn’t coming towards us. If it did, we wouldn’t be here to tell the story.”

Mrs Johnson praised those who came to the scene.

She said: “Everyone has been amazing. I want to thank them. Especially in times like these it is nice to get recognition. “One man got my son out of the car, and a woman, said she worked in mental health, she got us to safety into the [nearby] pharmacy and they were amazing, making sure we were okay.

“Looking at the car now, I just think someone was looking down on us that day.

“We were very lucky.

“I just want to thank everyone for their help and want people to realise there is good out there in bad times.

“Hopefully it might make people think twice about what they are doing in their car.”

Staffordshire Police said the road was closed for a short time while the cars were recovered after the collision. The red Audi suffered front end damage in the smash.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said one ambulance attended and arrived to find two patients who had got out of the vehicle.

They did not require hospital treatment.

Looking at the car now, I just think someone was looking down on ius that day. We were very lucky.
