Revolution at Rovers after debts cleared

-

BOOSTED by the club’s owner, Wael Al-qadi, clearing their substantial debts during the summer, manager Ben Garner has effected something of a revolution in the playing staff.

Rovers’ promotion bid last season fell away dramatically in a run of only two wins in 19 matches before the campaign was halted early and Garner, appointed in December after Graham Coughlan’s departure, knew it was time for a rebuild.

Burton Albion visit the Memorial Ground, Rovers’ home of 25 years now, for a League One game tomorrow (3pm) with the Gas having been boosted by ending Lincoln City’s unbeaten start to the season last week.

The club are understood to be working comfortably within the new salary cap despite a plethora of signings, as those were matched by departures in the summer.

Thirteen players have arrived so far, including yesterday’s loan capture of midfielder Erhun Oztumer from Charlton Athletic.

But no fewer than 22 departed Rovers in the summer, 17 of them released – an indication of their need for cutbacks in the face of both the pandemic and the salary cap.

Although they have fallen out of the Football League and returned in the last decade and sit in the shadow of neighbours Bristol City in terms of success, Rovers are still seen as a big club, as Burton boss Jake Buxton noted, although he was not sure they were good value for the 2-1 win away to Lincoln.

“Lincoln looked a better side than Bristol from the video I’ve watched but Bristol got the result, which was what was required,” said Buxton.

“It’s a tough job, (managing) Bristol Rovers is, with the demands and the expectation. They are a big club.

“They have made some great signings in the summer, so we expect it to be tough but we’ll be ready.”

Garner is especially pleased to have added Oztumer to his squad on a season-long loan in time to face Burton.

“He’s a player who has great experience at this level and above,” said Garner.

“With his ability and creativity he will be a great addition to the options that we have in the attacking positions.”

The player himself welcomed his change of scenery.

“It’s been so smooth, I found out yesterday and I’m here now,” he told the club website.

“I spoke to (Rovers defender) Luke Leahy yesterday and he’s been saying some great things and that it’s a great club.

“Hopefully, I can make more friends here and help the team in any way I can.

“I can use my experience in different leagues and different countries and put it into Rovers and help the team in any way, shape or form. I can’t wait to get started.”
