A High-profile Burton councillor believes he has been deliberately targeted after his car was vandalised smashed near his home.

Councillor Syed Hussain has been vocal over people breaking Covid rules during the pandemic, condemning those from his own community for breaching lockdown rules.

He says he has been left “deeply upset” by the attack and suspects it may have been carried out by people not happy with the work he does in the community.

Councillor Hussain, Staffordshire, who represents the Anglessy area in the town, was in at the time of the incident near his home in Clarence Street and was only made aware when neighbours knocked on his door to inform him.

Three windows were smashed and a dent left in the bodywork of his grey Hyundai i30.

He said: “I do feel like this was a targeted attack as only my car on the street was vandalised, and it’s something I will not allow to divert my attention to supporting my community.

“I do feel there are people out there who for some odd reason are not happy with the work I have been doing, especially during the tough times relating to Covid-19.”

The incident took place on Wednesday night. Councillor Hussain said: “My home is like my office, even if people need me at 11pm at night I am there for them, so it is really unfortunate that even in these tough times people have the motive to carry out such acts.

“This act will not deter me from supporting my community and I am more committed than ever to serve my people and support them in whatever way I can.

“The community has been very supportive since the incident and I have been overwhelmed with their support.

“If anyone has a issue with me I will be more than happy to discuss it with them and they can contact me directly.

“I am a firm believer in a happy society and there is no place for hatred, and I hope the perpetrators are caught soon. “I would like to thank Staffordshire Police for their cooperation and once again my thanks to the community for showing me their support and sympathy during this tough period.” A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: “We were called to Clarence Street, Burton shortly after 10:30pm last night, Wednesday 3 January, to reports of car windows being smashed.

“Local enquiries are under way”.

This act will not deter me from supporting my community. Councillor Syed Hussain
