Wigan feel the heat as rivals left in the cold

-

WITH frozen pitches ruling out four matches, none of Burton Albion’s other League One relegation rivals played on Saturday, allowing the Brewers to close to within two points of four clubs above them.

Wigan Athletic had the chance to pull further clear yesterday away to Oxford United.

The game was goalless at halftime but there was an hour’s delay before the start of the second half when fire broke out on one of the floodlights.

The match was able to restart but the delay meant it finished after we went to press.

At the top, second-placed Hull City missed the chance to move above leaders Lincoln City when they lost 1-0 for the second successive week.

Former Brewer Scott Fraser scored the only goal from the penalty spot for MK Dons.

Lincoln were at home to Accrington Stanley yesterday but the game finished after we went to press.

Charlie Wyke scored all four to reach 21 for the season as Sunderland beat Doncaster Rovers 4-1 at home.

Aiden Mcgeady provided the assists for three first-half headed goals and after goalkeeper Lee Burge’s own goal gave Doncaster a glimmer of hope, Wyke headed his fourth, again assisted by Mcgeady.

Burge saved two penalties after that to ensure there would be no fightback.

Sunderland climbed into the top six at the expense of Charlton Athletic, who were beaten 3-2 at home by Gillingham.

The Gills led three times through Olly Lee, Connor Ogilvie and Kyle Dempsey, Charlton equalising twice through Chuks Aneke, who was later sent off, and Jayden Stockley.

Plymouth Argyle are unbeaten in eight League games after a 1-0 home win against Fleetwood Town, whose defender Harrison Holgate put through his own goal after 11 minutes.
