Quy arrival adds experience to Burton’s staff

-

ANDY Quy’s recent appointment as Burton Albion’s head of goalkeeping brings the Brewers more experience in their backroom.

That is no disrespect to Ross Atkins, who started the season in the position but has now returned to Derby County as head of academy goalkeeping.

Quy has simply been away from the playing side of the game and coaching for longer than Atkins and has signed on for the Brewers with an excellent CV behind him.

Both he and Atkins are former Derby County goalkeepers, although Atkins shaded Quy 1-0 in senior appearances.

Quy played 80 games for Hereford United in the Conference and followed it with brief spells with Halesown Town and Belper Town before injury cut short his career and he turned fully to coaching in 2001.

The 44-year-old therefore brings 20 years of coaching experience to Burton.

He left Championship club Brentford last year and previously spent a decade with Stoke City, much of it in the Premier League, working with goalkeepers such as Jack Butland, Thomas Sorensen and Asmir Begovic.

As well as coaching, he has become an FA Consultant, having started as a Goalkeeping B Licence Tutor in 2019.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s handson role as manager is illustrated by the fact that it was he who invited Quy aboard.

“I’m very happy to be coming in and to be working alongside Jimmy and Dino (Maamria),” said Quy.

“I received a phone call from the manager, who said that the club were looking for a new head of goalkeeping and I’m delighted to join.”

Quy’s role will mean that he will oversee the first team and academy goalkeeping set-up and he says that was a key factor for him. “That’s what mainly attracted me to the role, to oversee the development of the goalkeepers throughout the club,” he said.

“Primarily, the biggest job is to keep the club in the League and to make sure that the first team goalkeepers are competing and producing the best they can on a Saturday.

“Ultimately, we need to make sure we have a stream of goalkeepers coming through the academy from under-nines upwards and into the under-18s.

“In the first team, we’ve got four really good goalkeepers at the club at the moment, all of varying ages and experiences, and it’s going to be a fight for them all to earn a place on a Saturday now.”

Hasselbaink added: “Andy is a very experienced goalkeeping coach and he has lots of years of working in higher leagues. We are very lucky to have someone like him join our club.”
