A CHILD was among those involved in a serious crash that closed part of the A38 near Burton for hours.

The northbound carriageway near the Egginton and Willington turning was closed for around seven hours on Monday night after an Audi Q3 car carrying a man, woman and a child collided with a lorry. The man and child were injured, while the woman suffered life-threatening injuries.

An eyewitness travelling in the opposite direction said: “It looked like a serious crash. When I passed, the Highways Agency was there dealing with traffic and clearing up. There was wreckage of a car across the two lanes. It looked very bad. I hope everyone is OK.

“There was no traffic on that side of the road as it had been stopped getting on the A38 further down. The Highways officers were directing people.”

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said: “We were called to the A38 northbound, near Egginton, at 6.15pm last night, Monday, April 26, following reports that a lorry and an Audi Q3 had collided.

“A man, woman and child in the Audi were injured, with the woman having suffered life-threatening injuries.

“The A38 was closed while we worked to clear the scene. It was reopened at about 1.30am today.”

East Midlands Ambulance Service said two paramedics in two ambulance cars, five crewed ambulances, a medical first responder and a responder from the air ambulance.

A spokesman said the patients were taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham and Royal Derby Hospital.
