A CINEMA room is one of the activities planned for a new day care centre operating from a former police station.

Specialising in services for adults with learning disabilities, the building will be operated by Lotus Care Services.

It has launched the centre Lotus after leasing the former Hawthorn Business Centre in Hawthorn Crescent, Stapenhill, in a deal brokered by Burton-based commercial property agent Rushton Hickman.

The property was originally Stapenhill Police Station and offers 1,384sq ft of space including reception lobby, eight offices, kitchen, toilets including a shower, plus on-site parking.

The centre includes a sensory room, art and crafts room, sensory exploration room, cinema room, two service user hubs, a dining room and kitchen area.

Business owners Gemma Cawser and Jun-wai Wong said: “We have over 20 years combined experience in caring for both children and adults who have learning disabilities, autism and associated challenging behaviours.

It is important to our service users they are close to local amenities. The location is easily accessible to the community.

“We really enjoy what we do and love seeing what the service users are able to achieve within our centre. We chose this property as it is important to our service users they are close to all local amenities. The location is easily accessible to the local community of Burton and the surrounding areas.

“Opening the enrichment centre has also created local employment. We have taken on some amazing staff who are all fully trained up and as the service grows we have plans to employ more like minded individuals to come and join the team.

“We’d like to add a personal note of thanks to Rushton Hickman and especially to Simon Walker as he was brilliant. He kept in touch regularly throughout the process and was a pleasure to work with.”

Mr Walker said: “As soon as I knew this property was going to be put on the market, I immediately saw the potential as a day care centre, particularly as it was already DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliant and had onsite car parking.

“We negotiated lease terms and completed the deal quickly on this property. Lotus Enrichment Centre services will certainly benefit the local community, particularly as it is sited in a densely residential area. A great result for Gemma and Jun-wai, our client and ourselves.”
