1839: The Henley Regatta, now establishe­d as British rowing’s showpiece event, took place for the first time.

1929: Australian Alan Davidson, arguably the best left-arm quick bowler the game has seen, was born. In the tied Test against West Indies in 1960, he scored 124 runs and took 11 wickets, the first to pass 100 runs and 10 wickets in the same Test – and did it with a broken finger.

1952: Britain’s Jim Peters set a marathon world record in two hours, 20 minutes, 42.2 seconds.

1979: In a cricket World Cup match at Old Trafford, England bowled out no-hopers Canada for 45 in 40.3 overs, Chris Old taking 4-8. England got the runs with 46.1 overs and eight wickets to spare.

1982: Italy opened their World Cup campaign in Spain with a goalless draw against Poland. They went on to win the competitio­n, later beating Poland 2-0 in the semi-finals.

2002: Portugal were eliminated from the World Cup when they lost 1-0 to co-hosts South Korea.

2003: David Beckham was awarded an OBE.

2007: Joey Barton completed his move to Newcastle United from Manchester City for £5.8m.

2009: Andy Murray beat James Blake 7-5 6-4 to win the Aegon Championsh­ip title at Queen’s Club.

2012: Tottenham Hostpur confirmed the sacking of manager Harry Redknapp.

2016: Ronald Koeman was appointed Everton manager.

2017: Southampto­n sacked manager Claude Puel.

2018: Hosts Russia opened their World Cup campaign with a 5-0 thrashing of Saudi Arabia.
