POLICE ARE TREATING THE DEATH OF BENJAMIN ORTON, 17, AS MURDER AND ARE HOLDING ANOTHER TEENAGE BOY FROM SWADLINCOTE IN CUSTODY –
A TEENAGE boy who died after an assault in Swadlincote town centre has been named by police.
The 17-year-old has been named as Benjamin Orton and his family have shared a photograph.
Benjamin died after an assault in the town on Saturday night, June 12. He died at the scene, despite attempts by emergency crews to save him.
A 20-year-old man was also found with serious, and potentially lifechanging, injuries. He was taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition, a spokesman for the police has said.
The force also says a teenage boy has now been arrested by officers investigating the death and the assault in the town.
The boy, who is from the Swadlincote area, was arrested on Sunday evening and is in police custody.
Police were called to reports of an assault at an alleyway at the side of the Odeon cinema, in Coppice Side, just before 10.40pm on Saturday night.
They are treating Benjamin’s death as murder and are still appealing to the public to come forward with any information, dashcam or CCTV footage from the area.
Anyone who was in the area and noticed any people or vehicles on the roads surrounding The Pipeworks retail park around the time of the incident which they think could be of interest to officers are asked to get in touch.
