1929: Middlesex bowler Gubby Allen arrived late for a match against Lancashire at Lord’s after having to work in the morning. He then took 10-40 in 25.3 overs and no-one has taken all 10 wickets at Lord’s since.

1982: Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 in Spain to register the highest score in the final stages of the World Cup.

1996: England went top of their Euro 96 group by beating Scotland 2-0 at Wembley. Paul Gascoigne scored a spectacula­r clinching goal after Alan Shearer had put England ahead and David Seaman had saved a penalty from Scotland captain Gary Mcallister.

2000: Tottenham Hotspur agreed to sell French winger David Ginola to Premiershi­p rivals Aston Villa for £3m.

2006: Late goals from Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard gave England an unconvinci­ng 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in the World Cup.

2009: England lost by five wickets to the West Indies in their Super Eights match in the World Twenty20 at the Oval to miss out on the semi-finals.

2012: Michael Laudrup, on his 48th birthday, was named as the new manager of Swansea City. He led the team to success in the League Cup to book a place in the 2013-14 Europa League.

2015: Mark Warburton was appointed Rangers manager.

2018: Rory Mcilroy missed the cut in the US Open for the third year in succession, despite a 10-shot improvemen­t on his opening round at Shinnecock Hills.

2019: A baseball jersey formerly belonging to Babe Ruth sold for 5.64 million dollars at a New York auction, becoming what was believed to be the most expensive piece of sports memorabili­a in history.
