1930: Don Bradman became the first Australian to score a Test century at Trent Bridge, one of the 11 he scored on English soil. Despite his 131-run second innings knock, Australia lost by 93 runs and the game was also notable for the appearance of a substitute fielder for England, Sydney Copley. His catch at mid on to dismiss Stan Mccabe was a key moment as Australia were 229-3 in pursuit of 429 to win.

1962: Brazil beat Czechoslov­akia 3-1 in Santiago to win the World Cup, with goals from Amarildo, Zito and Vava. They became the second team to retain the trophy, after Italy first achieved the feat in 1938.

1991: Payne Stewart won his first US Open and second major title at the Hazeltine National Golf Club, Minnesota. He defeated fellow American Scott Simpson in an 18-hole play-off.

2003: Manchester United announced they had accepted a £25m bid from Real Madrid for David Beckham. 2013: Golfer Justin Rose captured his first major championsh­ip, the US Open at Merion, Pennsylvan­ia, and was the first Englishman to win the tournament since Tony Jacklin in 1970.

2015: Leicester City sacked players Tom Hopper, Adam Smith and James Pearson for their part in a sexually-explicit video during which racist language was used.

2016: The IAAF Council voted to maintain Russia’s ban from athletics ahead of the Rio Olympics.

2017: American golfer Justin Thomas equalled the lowest score in major championsh­ip history, producing a nineunder-par 63 in his third round at the US Open at Erin Hills.

2018: Golfer Brooks Koepka retained the US Open title at Shinnecock Hills. Tommy Fleetwood shot a final-round 63 but could not catch him and finished second.
