1846: The first official baseball match took place at Elysian Fields, Hoboken, New York. New York Nine beat the Knickerbocker Club 23-1.
1903: English cricket great Wally Hammond was born. He played 85 Tests between 1927 and 1947 and scored a then Test record aggregate of 7,249 runs, including 336 not out against New Zealand at Auckland in 1933, and hit 50,511 first-class runs in all. He died in July 1965.
1978: Ian Botham became the first man to score a century and take eight wickets (eight for 34) in an innings in the same Test match, for England against Pakistan at Lord’s. 2007: England defeated West Indies by seven wickets in the fourth and final Test at Chesterle-street to complete a 3-0 series success.
2010: France striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home from the World Cup in South Africa after refusing to apologise for his halftime rant at coach Raymond Domenech during the 2-0 defeat to Mexico earlier that week.
2014: England were beaten 2-1 by Uruguay at the World Cup in Sao Paulo, with Luis Suarez scoring twice. England drew 0-0 in their final Group D match to finish in last place with one point.
2016: Andy Murray won a record fifth title at Queen’s Club with a 6-7 (5) 6-4 6-3 victory over world number nine Milos Raonic.
2018: Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow struck hundreds as England recorded an ODI worldrecord 481 for six on their way to a 242-run win over Australia that gave them an unassailable 3-0 series lead.
