Traumatised cat is returned to shelter after rehoming didn’t work out

-

A TABBY cat who was taunted and abused by her owners is back at Burton’s RSPCA shelter after she became “spooked” with her new family.

Lulu’s previous owners would squirt her with a water gun whenever she went near them, leading her to become “wild with fear” when she was eventually rescued by RSPCA inspectors.

She also lived in squalor and hissed “ferociously” at RSPCA staff when they tried to feed her, leading to concerns she would never be able to be rehomed.

Lulu was taken to Burton’s RSPCA animal shelter in Hillfield Lane, Stretton, in January after she was rescued – and she was later rehomed after a complete turnaround in her behaviour. However, she was returned to the shelter after her behaviour changed again when she was let outside and became “spooked”.

A spokesman for the shelter said: “Sadly it didn’t work out for our precious Lulu and she is now back with us and up for rehoming again.

“Lulu was abused in her first home and the trauma of her past is something she finds difficult to forget. We’ve had tough times with Lulu and her rehabilitation has by no means been easy but she continues to amaze us every day with her progress.

“We probably shouldn’t have favourites, but we’ve gone through so much with Lulu that it’s hard not to have a soft spot.”

The spokesman further explained the reason for her return, saying: “Unfortunately Lulu came back to us as her behaviour changed after her new owners let her outside. They had her for nearly two months and we think once they let her out, this really spooked her.

“Lulu is very easily spooked so we believe this is what caused her temperament to change so suddenly.

“We would want her new owner to keep her indoors for much longer. We will be looking for a very experienced owner who has lots and lots of patience.

“Her abusive past means she has huge trust issues but deep down she is a real sweetheart who just wants to be loved.”
