A PENSIONER who got lost in the grounds of a South Derbyshire stately home was hospitalised after being found in woodlands.

The 74-year-old called the police himself, saying that he was in need of assistance as he was somewhere in the grounds of Calke Abbey.

However, he had no idea where he was.

Officers from the safer neighbourhood teams in Swadlincote, Melbourne, Hilton and Mercia, along with response officers, began searching the vast woodlands around the area in a bid to find him.

He was found by PSCO Andrea Thompson, who comforted the man and administered first aid at the scene. The officers who found him then used the What3words app to assist other officers and crews from East Midlands Ambulance Service to the scene. The app uses three random words to direct people to any geographic location. The man was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital, where he is said to be in a stable condition, a spokesman for the Swadlincote Police Safer Neighbourhood Team said.

Sergeant Tarj Nizzer said: “I am very proud of the quick response from my team; their enthusiasm and dedication never fails to surprise me, well done to all those involved.”
