UP TO 15,000 visitors flocked to South Derbyshire’s Festival of Leisure in July 2002 to make the most of the summer sun.

The two-day event at Maurice Lea Memorial Park in Church Gresley featured music, displays and exhibitions from groups across the district.

Organiser Chris Mason said: “The weather is very important to us and we had sunshine all weekend apart from a spot of rain on Sunday at about 4.30pm, so it couldn’t have been better.

“The visitor numbers were similar to last year; we estimate between about 10,000 and 15,000 came here over the weekend.

“Having spoken to the people who exhibited at the event they said they generated a lot of interest over the two days.

“That is one of the main aims of the festival — to help local people raise funds and to help local interest groups in South Derbyshire show the rest of the community what they are doing.”

Admission to the festival was free, with events taking place in two arenas.

Attractions included fighting demonstrations from the Body Combat group and displays of strength by strongman Tony Brutus and his “Strongdaughter” Amanda.

Motoring enthusiasts enjoyed a classic car and motorcycle parade followed by a stunt display by the motorcycle madmen.

On Sunday the park hosted the Cheshire Canine Dog Display team and performances by the Texas Ranchers and the Gresley Old Hall Band.

Visitors also had the chance to learn more about The Steps Walking For Health Scheme, the National Forest and the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.

Teams from Rosliston Forestry Centre, Wildlife Watch and model clubs were also on hand to help youngsters make a Viking long boat.
