Sweet treats in short supply

-

DOUGHNUT fans had a disappointing start to the weekend after an overnight machine breakdown led to a shortage of them at Birds Bakery.

The firm said the doughnut fryer broke down on Friday night, which meant a lack of choice for lovers of the sweet treat the following day.

Birds Bakery, which has stores in Burton, Stretton, Swadlincote and Uttoxeter, said only caramel doughnuts were available at its stores on, ironically, the last day of National Doughnut Week.

To offset the disappointment, Birds has pledged to donate 20p to the Children’s Trust charity for every doughnut sold this Saturday when the fryer is back up and running properly.

Its shops still had its other cake favourites on sale on Saturday.

In a message to customers, Birds said: “Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused and have a lovely weekend. The Birds Bakery Team.”
