TEENAGERS on an electric scooter weaved through oncoming traffic on a historic Derbyshire bridge.

Officers from the safer neighbourhood teams covering South Derbyshire were surprised to see traffic building up on the Grade I-listed Swarkestone bridge.

And they were left horrified when they found out the cause of the problem was two teenagers riding across the ancient structure on a single scooter.

To make matters worse, they were not wearing helmets as they cut across lanes and weaved through the traffic, said a spokesman

They then rode on the pavement for more than 300 metres before being stopped by the police.

A spokesman for the team, which is an arm of Derbyshire police, said: “Leaving Melbourne in a police vehicle, the officers noted a build up of traffic on the historic Grade I-listed Swarkestone Bridge.

“They were horrified to observe two young people riding across the bridge on a single electric scooter. With no helmets on show and with no thought for their safety or other road users, the teenagers weaved through oncoming traffic before cutting across two lanes of the carriageway, before continuing their illegal pleasure ride on a pavement for over 300 metres.

“The youngsters’ journey ended when they stopped at a nearby petrol station, whereupon the e-scooter was seized and the rider was reported for driving offences. “Please remember it is unlawful to ride an e-scooter on the public highway.”

In a separate incident, officers were verbally abused by a man for no reason, in front of children before he drove off in a silver Volkswagen.

Police have now warned that he should expect a visit from officers over his behaviour.

The spokesman said: “Despite the children’s clear discomfort at the distasteful male’s conduct, this unimaginative lout hurled abuse at officers for no justified reason, before he left the scene in a wellworn silver Volkswagen.

“For his prize-winning performance of obstructing the officers in their duty, as well as showing no regard for the young people in the locality, the male can now expect a visit from officers to his home address in the coming days. We can’t wait to speak to him and ask – what were you thinking?”

The team went on to praise staff working at Foremark Reservoir, near Repton, and Staunton Harold for their dedication and hard work during the hot weather.
