FORMER England football captain Emlyn Hughes helped raise more than £1,000 for Burton’s Queen’s Hospital cancer appeal.

The ex-liverpool star was guest speaker at a sportmen’s dinner at Bretby Conference Centre.

Mr Hughes was joined by John Stiles — son of World Cup-winning Manchester United star Nobby — at the meal.

Business leaders from across Burton and South Derbyshire were among the 85 guests who enjoyed the three-course event, which raised £1,071 for the cancer appeal.

Barry Edwards, general manager of the conference centre, said: “Emlyn was well received and John Stiles warmed the crowd up well. Comedian Billy Bean was also very funny.”

Mr Edwards said the centre was considering holding a similar event in 2004.
