Brewers Women gear up for new campaign

-

BURTON Albion Women’s first team will begin their season with a home game against Doncaster Rovers Belles on Sunday, August 15.

The Brewers will compete again in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands, the fourth tier of English football.

They will be playing their home games at Rocester FC.

Following the season opener against Doncaster, the Brewers face away trips to play Boldmere St Michaels and Long Eaton United before returning to Rocester to take on Peterborough United at the end of the month.

Albion will also compete against, among others, Leek Town, Solihull Moors, Lincoln City and Sporting Khalsa in a division of 13 teams.

Most matches are on Sundays and they have a League Cup campaign starting on September 12.

They also begin in the FA Women’s Cup with a second round tie on October 3 and, if they get through, a third round tie on October 24.

Christmas and New Year sees a break in the fixtures after a game on December 12, the season resuming on January 9.

Joint managers of the team are Tommy Booth and Kristian Gilbert.

Booth says Doncaster will provide the ideal test for the Brewers.

“It’ll be a big test and we’re not disappointed about it,” he said.

“They’re what we are thinking will be one of the best teams in the league and testing ourselves against them early on is a positive.

“Wolves were the runaway leaders the last two seasons and them being out of the league changes the whole dynamic – a few fresh teams have come in from the league below and

it will be interesting.”

Supporters can watch the team at Rocester, with a season ticket costing £25 going on sale soon.

“We’ve only managed to take charge of a handful of games and none of them had fans,” said Booth.

“So to have fans for the first time for us is huge and I don’t think you’ll get much better value than £25 for a season of football, once they’re on

sale.

“It’ll be huge for the kids and we’d love to see younger girls at our games, cheering us on. If you’re a young family and want to take everyone to watch some football, it’s fantastic value.

“We’ve had a couple of sessions in pre-season. We have brought a lot of fresh players in and we’ve got quite a bit of interest.”
