Teen’s quarry dive to help stricken pair

-

A “BRAVE” teenager dived into the water at a Derbyshire quarry to rescue two people he thought were drowning.

Kya Walsh, below, was visiting Waterswallows Quarry near Buxton with friends on Monday evening when he saw two teenagers struggling in the water.

The 17-year-old, from Stockport, said he had already seen the pair with a friend earlier, and they had appeared to be learning how to swim.

Kya says he then saw the two people, who were around the age of 19, go under the water. He dropped his bag and dived straight in, eventually pulling both to the safety of some nearby rocks.

Kya’s mum, Katie Walsh, said she was “incredibly proud” of her son.

She is now trying to contact the two boys to check on their recovery. Kya said he was able to rescue one of the boys and bring them to the shore, but he had to go back for the other lad who was still struggling.

“He kept grabbing onto my shoulders and pushing me under with him. It was really hard,” he said. “I was just trying to get him to the rocks. They were really panicked and not speaking. There were about 12 other people there at the time but nobody else did anything.

“I didn’t really feel scared but when we got out one of them came wup to me and gave me a big hug.

“I just wanted to get them out.” A number of young people have died in water-related incidents during the current heatwave. This includes a man who died after getting into trouble in the water at Victory Quarry, which is also near Buxton, on Sunday.
