John Travolta, below, introduced Oscar audiences in 2014 to famous singer… Adele Dazeem. He was tasked with introducing Idina Menzel for her performance of Let It Go from Frozen, but the Grease actor said: “Please welcome the wickedly talented, one and only Adele Dazeem.” The gaff spawned a wave of internet memes and remains a popular clip on

John Travolta went viral again in 2019 when he appeared to mistake drag queen Jade Jolie for Taylor Swift at the MTV VMA awards and tried to hand her the award for best video of the year. He later said so many people had crowded onto the stage he had simply been trying to find the singer. 1

American film director Spike Lee, left, was a bit premature with his announcement that horror thriller Titane had won this year’s Cannes Film Festival. After several false starts, he implored Sharon Stone to make the Palme d’or announcement, explaining: “She’s not going to mess it up.” Lee spent several moments with his head in his hands before apologising profusely for taking a lot of the suspense out of the evening. “I messed up,” he added. “As simple as that.”

Sir Terry Wogan and

Fearne Cotton announced different winners at the same time for the UK’S Eurovision entry in 2007. They were presenting the public vote on TV’S Making Your Mind Up show with Terry declaring band Scooch, above, the winners and Fearne, singer Cyndi. Terry had the right winner. 2 It is unlikely the 2017 Oscars mistake will ever be topped. Faye Dunaway and

Warren Beatty, inset, announced La La Land had won Best Picture – when it was Moonlight.

La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz announced: “There’s a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won best picture. This is not a joke. Moonlight has won best picture.”

Olly Murs was helping to present ITV’S The

X Factor in 2009 when he mistakenly informed contestant Monica Michaels that she was leaving... before the judges had all voted. The decision eventually ended up going to the public vote and Monica was sent home. Olly, right, later apologised for the blunder. 3

Legendary British actor Laurence Olivier forgot to announce any of the contenders for Best Picture during the 1985 Academy Awards. He simply came on stage and loudly announced Amadeus as the winner.

MOBO hosts Rickie Haywood-williams and Melvin Odoom had to backtrack after handing the Best Song award to London trio WSTRN (pictured) in 2016 due to “human error”. The band even gave an acceptance speech, but the award was actually meant for a track by Abra Cadabra featuring Krept and

Konan. 4

Elizabeth Taylor also nearly missed out announcing the nominees for best film at the 2001 Golden Globe Awards. She started opening the envelope to reveal the winner until the audience began calling out to her to stop.

There was embarrassment all around on Australia’s Next Top Model in 2010 when presenter Sarah Murdoch wrongly crowned Kelsey Martinovich as the winner, before hastily saying there had been a mistake and it was actually Amanda Ware who won. The show gave Kelsey a cash prize and free trip to the US to apologise.
