Council is hoping to cash in as old school up for sale

GUIDE PRICE OF £295,000 FOR BUILDING THAT CLOSED IN 2013

A 144-YEAR-OLD former school in South Derbyshire that closed eight years ago is set to be sold at auction.

The old Church Gresley Infants and Nursery School in York Road will have a guide price of £295,000 when it goes under the hammer in October.

The Victorian building closed in 2013 and its pupils moved to the new, larger £6.1 million Pennine Way Academy.

The adjoining schoolhouse was sold in 2015 and is now a home. The separate prefab temporary classrooms and playground site on the opposite side of School Street was sold for residential development in 2016. The following year, the prefab buildings were bulldozed to make way for 13 homes with more than £30,000 ploughed into education in the area.

Derbyshire County Council is hoping to sell off the remainder of the site as part of a bid to raise cash after being forced to cut £157 million from its budget at the time it closed.

The remaining Victorian school buildings are on a site measuring 0.48 acres. SDL Property Auctions is set to sell off the building and said it is suitable for residential development.

The marketing report added: “Informal planning advice obtained from South Derbyshire District Council supports residential conversion for nine homes, with potential to create an opening into the central courtyard for off-street parking.”

The auction will be held at 10am on October 28. The event will be live-streamed, with remote bidding only. Registration for bidding will close at noon the day before the auction.
