CRASH DRAMA IN VILLAGE

POLICE PRAISE RESIDENTS AND NEARBY CO-OP FOR THEIR HELP, BUT SLAM IMPATIENT AND RUBBERNECKING DRIVERS

A “BRAVE” member of the public rescued a car crash victim as police have slammed idiotic drivers who barged past the cordon at the scene of the accident.

The accident led to power being cut to nearby homes, which saw workers from the Co-op in Willington step in to help neighbours affected by storing frozen food which would otherwise have defrosted.

But in incredible scenes, police said one rubbernecking motorist almost hit a boy crossing the road using a zebra crossing as she strained to see the crashed vehicle which had plunged into a ditch in Repton Road.

In scenes that left police exasperated, a driver “furious” they had been made to wait during the incident ploughed through the police cordon surrounding the incident by mounting a pavement.

A host of emergency services attended the scene on Friday, September 3, along with Cadent Gas, Western Power and Burrows Recovery.

The motorist received emergency medical treatment at the scene after being freed from the crashed car by a member of the public.

Officers from Mercia safer neighbourhood team said they were “overwhelmed” by the generosity of the local community who supported residents involved in the incident.

They said shop workers from the nearby Willington Co-op store gathered and stored frozen foods from the homes of vulnerable residents whose electricity supply had been cut off as a result of the accident.

Other residents and shop owners offered to make hot drinks for the rescue teams during the incident.

However, the officers said: “But like so many acts of selflessness, they are often matched by equal selfishness.”

A rubber-necking woman driver did not notice a young boy trying to get across the road on a zebra crossing. The woman nearly hit the youngster and when stopped by officers she offered an “inexplicable excuse” that she’d been involved in a car accident in the past so why should this incident matter?

She was then issued with a Section 59 Notice Warning and told if she is caught driving again with no thought for pedestrians on zebra crossings her car would be seized, said a police spokesman.

A male driver later ploughed through the police cordon, mounting a pavement. He told shocked police officers that he often scales pavements to get past cars in the road and could not understand what he’d done wrong. He was issued with a Section 59 Notice Warning and told to leave the scene.

Police are now on the hunt for another impatient driver who honked their horn as medics treated the injured man.

This conduct caused alarm to local residents at the scene and an investigation is under way to find the person and action will be taken as soon as they are identified, said a spokesman.
