Care home plan for former hotel

- By HELEN KREFT helen.kreft@reachplc.com

A FORMER hotel which has been empty for two years could be given a new lease of life, plans have revealed.

Riversholme, in High Street, Rocester, Uttoxeter, was a nine-bedroom hotel but closed down two years ago.

Now, residential care provider Creative Care (East Midlands) Ltd is hoping to turn the building into a seven-bed residential care home.

If plans are approved by East Staffordshire Borough Council, the building will provide residential care and support for people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder and additional needs.

Up until 1997, Riversholme was a school until it was turned into the hotel and restaurant.

A report submitted alongside the application said: “The proposed change of use will create a sevenbed care home with a shared dining area provided at ground floor level.

The ground floor will also include a kitchen, office and reception area, alongside toilet facilities and storage area.

“Some residents will benefit from more than just a bedroom but will still share other facilities with other residents and, for example, dine with them. The site will operate as a single care home. The proposed residential care home will be used to accommodate up to seven residents with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder and related needs, with staff on site to take care of their needs.

“The applicant, Creative Care, provides high quality residential care and support for people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. It offers more than just a high quality environment in which its service users can maximise their individual potential – it provides a home for its residents, with a family of expert staff to support them every day.

“It has been providing high quality residential care since 2005 and is building on its range of existing services and residential locations in order to meet the growing needs of commissioners, service users and their families. Its vision is to be the best autism care provider in the Midlands.”

The report added that the hotel had potential to generate significant traffic during busy periods, whereas the care home will be smaller with just seven residents with a small number of staff.

A decision is due to the next few months.
