DETECTIVES have questioned an 18-year-old youth after a late-night attack left a man in a “critical condition” in hospital.

They arrested the teenager – who is from Birmingham – on suspicion of “violence against the person” on Saturday, following an incident in Market Place, Uttoxeter, at 1.50am on the same day.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Detectives are appealing for witnesses following an assault which left a man in a critical condition in hospital.

“One male victim needed emergency medical treatment and was taken to hospital by paramedics where he remains.

“An 18-year-old man from Birmingham was arrested on suspicion of violence against the person and remains in custody for questioning.”

Police cordoned off part of Market Place as part of their investigation into the incident.

One shopper, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s quite worrying as you don’t normally see something like this on a Saturday morning in Uttoxeter.

“Although it’s not unusual to get a bit of violence in the town centre on a Friday or Saturday night, this does look more serious than the normal run-of-the-mill Friday night fight.”

A police cordon was in place in Uttoxeter Market Place on Saturday with forensics officers at the scene.

Officers were blocking the entrance to the Market Place from Bridge Street and Church Street.

Shoppers in the town centre were directed away from the cordon. However, traders on the market were still able to operate.

Witnesses should call the police on 101, quoting incident number 77 of September 11 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
