Pub frozen in time after a decade of standing empty

- By RICHARD CASTLE richard.castle@reachplc.com

URBAN explorers have released eerie footage from inside an abandoned pub near Burton.

Many of the Blacksmith’s Arms’ features and property remain intact, with the pub instantly recognisable from when it was open.

Glasses are still stocked behind the bar, with empty cans dotted around and the specials board still advertising tasty-sounding pub grub for less than £6 a head.

The discoveries were made by Daniel Sims – known as Beardedreality – who entered the Birch Cross pun, just outside Marchington, in the summer.

He said: “It definitely looked like it was once a nice local. I was surprised to see so much left behind there. It’s crazy to think that such a place is left abandoned when it could quite easily be put to use.”

It is not the first visit to Staffordshire made by Beardedreality. He recently went into the abandoned army barracks at Marchington camp, uncovering an array of stunning graffiti art. Read about his trip to the barracks here.

The Blacksmiths has been closed since 2012, with several planning applications having been submitted to turn it into homes since.

Two were rejected, another withdrawn and the fourth is yet to be heard by the borough planning committee.

The latest application, entered by applicant Jason Brindley, is to turn the pub into two homes and build five more on land at the site.

Police have previously released safety and legal warnings against urban explorers entering condemned buildings and you should not copy what he does.
