Kane: I should have had two goals

-

THERE were mixed emotions for Kane Hemmings after the 1-1 draw with Gillingham.

While happy to get his first goal of the season in only his second appearance, the Burton Albion striker was kicking himself for not scoring twice.

“It’s nice to get off the mark but we’re a bit disappointed with the result and I should have scored in the first half,” said Hemmings, who had been put through by Harry Chapman but hit the legs of keeper Jamie Cumming with his shot.

“When they’re as easy as that, I should score,” he said.

“I think we controlled the ball quite well and got in good areas but probably didn’t pick the right pass at times.

“We still had opportunities to make a better decision, to make a pass or get a shot off, so we’re disappointed.

“We were good enough, up to the final third, to get three points.

“We’re hoping it’s just a one-off and, next week, if we have those opportunities, we make better decisions – we need to be a bit more clinical, not just with the chances but with the final pass or by being a bit more selfless, all things like that.”

The goal Hemmings did score saw the Brewers get a reward from one of Tom Hamer’s long throws, as the striker turned in a neat header across the six-yard box from Michael Bostwick.

“It’s not a secret, it’s something we work on. It’s a lottery if you can get the first touch,” said Hemmings.

“You gamble that it falls into an area for you to put it away. You know kind of where it’s going to land and it’s up to me and the other lads to be on the front foot, get across people and get a shot away – they are not easy to defend.”
