‘Avoid using outside ATMS’
POLICE have warned shoppers not to use Burton’s outdoor cashpoints as conmen target people at the machines.
Men have been distracting account holders by telling them the cashpoints are out of order, before using their cards to withdraw and steal cash.
Police have revealed crimes were reported at ATMS in High Street and Station Street, Burton, as well as Malborough Way and George Street, Tamworth.
And they are urging shoppers to use cash machines inside their banks if possible.
Sergeant Matthew Williams, of East Staffordshire Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “An investigation is ongoing into these incidents.
“I would urge users of cash machines to make sure there is no-one behind them or congregating near a machine whilst they are using it.
“If possible, use indoor machines, ideally in your banking branch.
“Please do not use a cash machine if you feel like you are being watched or it does not feel safe to do so and report any suspicious activity immediately.”
The scammers targeted elderly people on Thursday, November 11, police have said. The first offence happened in Tamworth at 9.45am in Malborough Way, with a second happening at 11.30am in George Street. Three men were involved.
Around 15 minutes later, an elderly woman was targeted by two men in High Street, Burton, before an elderly man was scammed in Station Street at around 11.50am.
One suspect is described as a middleaged man, with short dark hair, but police have no descriptions of any other suspects.
