Adam tops the list of local people recognised in Queen’s Honours
FORMER TOP COP ALSO GETS AWARD FOR HIS POLICE SERVICE
OLYMPIC hero Adam Peaty has been made an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list in recognition for his services to swimming and mental health.
The Uttoxeter-born swimmer has been raising awareness of mental health issues after winning two Olympic gold medals at the Tokyo Games in 2021 in 100 metre breast stroke and the mixed 4x100metre relay.
Dad Peaty, wowed fans when he appeared on Strictly Come Dancing this year, especially during a dance to George Michael’s Faith. Peaty would be knocked out of Strictly in week seven with professional dancer Katya Jones.
He had first competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and went on to represented Team GB at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio where he won gold in the 100-metre breast stroke.
Peaty also came third in 2021 in the annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year award behind fellow aquatic Olympian Tom Daley and tennis star Emma Raducanu.
There was also success at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) with its recently retired end-of-life care facilitator Karen Bussooa also receiving an OBE for her services to end of life care for patients after 40 years with the NHS.
In the last 13 years, she has helped to implement a number of initiatives to improve end of life care for patients, including the Birds Model, the pop-up bedrooms scheme and the opening of the Healing Garden at Royal Derby Hospital, as well as establishing the education programme for nurses.
Former Staffordshire Police
Chief Constable Gareth Morgan, who retired earlier this year, is set to receive the Queen’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service for three decades of work for the force.
Most recently, he served as Chief Constable within the Staffordshire force for four years.
Mr Morgan started his career in 1987 when he joined West Midlands Police.
He then worked for West Mercia and Warwickshire forces before joining Staffordshire in 2017 from his post at Avon and Somerset Police, where he had been the Deputy Chief Constable since 2014.
Current Staffordshire Police Chief Constable Chris Noble, who started with the force in December 2021, said: “Mr Morgan has dedicated many years of his life to policing, working in a number of different forces throughout the West Midlands and beyond.
“During his time as Staffordshire Police Chief Constable, he guided the organisation through an extraordinary four years, leading officers, staff and the public through a challenging public health landscape during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as responding to ongoing financial pressures being faced by the force.
“He was a dedicated leader who passed on his wisdom and experience by coaching and mentoring many chief officers as part of his commitment to enable continuous improvement of police leadership.”
Honours in Staffordshire include continuing recognition for exceptional responses to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Lianne Al-khaldi, from Stafford, is made a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) having organised a network of 35 volunteers making PPE for hospitals – at
the same time as home schooling her four children. What started as a solo sewing operation grew as she taught her children how to read patterns and use the sewing machine, before becoming a focal point for volunteers’ efforts – with the group eventually making and delivering 3,500 items of PPE.
Prior to the pandemic, Lianne set up a “community fridge project” to support food banks and children’s centres and today helps more than 1,000 families access a fresh and healthy diet.
Emily Doorbar, from Caverswall, is also made a BEM for her work during the pandemic. A customer service manager at Staffordshire County Council, in March 2020 she quickly set up from scratch the county’s track and trace system to understand how the infection was
spreading and to limit transmissions wherever possible.
Her system achieved almost a 100 per cent success rate for contact tracing and was shared with other local authorities as best practice, as well as informing national development of local contact tracing.
She said: “Receiving this has been a shock and something I wasn’t expecting. As a team we knew how important it was to work together to put support in place for our residents, especially at a time when so much was unknown. I feel proud that we were able to be there for our residents when they needed us and to make a positive difference.
“Contact tracing has played an essential part in our response to Covid-19 and not only has it helped Staffordshire to keep our residents safe, it provided a way for us to connect with our community and offer support at a time when they needed it most.
“It’s not something me or the team have done before, so it’s fair to say it’s been a challenge, but a rewarding one.”
Other notable winners nationally include Olympian diver and Sports Personality of the Year runner-up Tom Daley, who is also set to receive an OBE for raising awareness of LGBT+ issues.
Recognising his leadership battling Covid-19, a knighthood goes to the Chief Medical Officer for England Professor Chris Whitty.
Damehoods are given to actresses Joanna Lumley and Vanessa Redgrave for their services to drama, entertainment and charity. Receiving OBES are veteran soap stars June Brown (Dot Branning in Eastenders) and Derbyshire man William Roache (Coronation Street’s Ken Barlow).”
