FLOWERS, lawns, trees, weeds — and all, went on show during an open gardens day in Rolleston in June 2003.

Around 800 people flocked to the East Staffordshire village during the sunshine to look at the 14 gardens which were opened to the public.

People came from as far away as the south coast to take a look at the gardens and take part in a weed hunt competition.

More than £3,500 was raised from the event, which was given to the village’s St Mary’s Church fund.

The 2003 event was the village’s 14th annual open gardens day and already organisers were planning the next one.

Rev Ian Whitehead, from St Mary’s Church in Church Road, Rolleston, said: “There were small gardens as well as larger, more established gardens on display.

“It was a wonderful day and four new gardens were also opened this year, which have never been seen before.

“We certainly managed to hold up the centre of the village for the day!”
