1780:
The first Derby was run at Epsom. The name of the race was decided by a toss of a coin between the 12th Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury. Bunbury had the consolation of seeing his horse, Diomed, partnered by jockey Sam Arnull, win the race.
1966:
Peter Shilton made his Football League debut, playing for Leicester City against Everton. The goalkeeper went on to play in a record 1,005 League games and won a record 125 England caps.
2003:
Manchester United won their eighth Premiership title in 11 seasons after Arsenal fell out of contention following a 3-2 defeat by Leeds United.
2005:
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho signed a new five-year contract at the club.
2006:
Steve Mcclaren was confirmed as Sven-goran Eriksson’s successor as England manager.
2007:
Leeds United’s relegation to League One was confirmed when they went into administration and therefore incurred a 10-point penalty.
2009:
John Higgins won snooker’s World Championship for the third time, defeating Shaun Murphy 18-9 in the final at the Crucible in Sheffield.
2014:
Former British tennis number one Elena Baltacha died after a battle against liver cancer. She was 30.
2018:
Rangers confirmed Steven Gerrard as their new manager on a four-year deal.
