Opportunity to learn more about medieval psalter at society lecture
THE Arts Society Dove Valley will learn more about a famous medieval manuscript that illustrates everyday life in the 14th century at its next meeting.
Professor Michelle Brown will give a talk about the Lutterell Psalter, said to be one of the most unusual and insightful of English medieval artworks, at Ashbourne Town Hall next Wednesday from 2.15pm.
Made for Sir Geoffrey Luttrell in the 1330s on the eve of the Black Death, the psalter’s pages convey images that give us a unique glimpse into life in manorial England and into the mind of a leading baronial patron and the artists and confessors who served him and who tried to steer his soul towards eternity.
Professor Brown is professor emerita of medieval manuscripts at the University of London.
At its next meeting on June 8, Shauna Isaac will give talk about famous artworks that have been stolen and remain missing, including
Raphael’s Portrait of a Young Man, Vermeer’s The Concert, and the missing panel from the Ghent Altarpiece.
