Safety concerns over big pothole

- By HELEN KREFT helen.kreft@reachplc.com

THIS is the pothole which has been dubbed Burton’s biggest.

The large hole was found in Shobnall Road, between Marston’s brewery and its junction with Shobnall Street.

Horninglow resident Barry Martin believes the pothole is so large it could kill a cyclist. Mr Martin said: “This is Burton’s biggest pothole, in Shobnall Road. It is a cyclist killer.

“It is in a zone which was resurfaced a few months back. It is one of 10 areas along there that need repairing. There is so little work done maintaining roads.”

David Williams, cabinet member for highways and transport at Staffordshire County Council, said: “We have a huge road network here in Staffordshire, with around 6,000km of roads, and our crews fix around 30,000 potholes each year.

“This year we are also investing an extra £15.5m on fixing our roads on top of a £50 million proposed investment in major projects, maintenance and local improvements.

“All reported highways issues are inspected as soon as possible and assessed for their severity.

Any defect which poses an immediate risk is dealt with as a priority.

“Lesser priority potholes are dealt with when resources are available.

“People can report highways issues on the Mystaffs app or at www.staffordshire.gov.uk.”
