Signs taken down at new town bakery

SIGNS have been taken down at a new Burton shop which was forced to temporarily close just weeks after it opened.

The company logo has disappeared from Sweet Moments Bakery, which only opened in the former Brighthouse furniture store, in Station Street, in January.

By February, it had closed again when its baker quit for another job, leaving the new shop desperately needing a replacement. The premises had been empty since 2020 when Brighthouse stores closed.

Sweet Moments owner Maciej Okoniewski had chosen Burton for his first shop due to its proximity to major cities such as Birmingham, Leicester and Nottingham, he said. Mr Okoniewski previously said he wanted to fill the vacant role left by the baker as soon as possible to get the bakery open again.

He has been approached for comment on the signs being taken down. As well as Brighthouse closing, the Kwei Ping restaurant above the store also closed two years ago when its owners retired after 30 years.

The old restaurant was temporarily used as the operating base for construction firm AMEY while its workers revamped Station Street and High Street. The restaurant is empty again now and is currently being offered for let.
