A CREATIVE Swadlincote teacher has made it through to the third week of BBC show The Great British Sewing Bee.

Brogan Sommerville, who teaches Spanish and French to secondary schoolchildren in South Derbyshire, excelled in her previous appearance when she was asked to make a daywear item out of a netball kit.

Brogan was told by judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant that her work for the transformation challenge, where contestants are told to make a new garment from an old one, was “exceptional”.

Making the garment, Brogan said: “I think I might end up doing a rare skirt with loads of frills and then I am thinking a pleated crop top.”

On winning the challenge, Brogan said: “I was so pleased with the comments – they really took me back and I am really pleased.”

Patrick told her: “There are so many clever, beautiful elements and you executed them so well. Fantastically well done.”

In the first challenge, contestants were asked to make a pair of high top trainers.

Brogan came in seventh place for her white trainers with a floral trim and red laces, having misaligned the tongue.

Her final look, inspired by Jessica Ennis-hill’s Teamgb jacket, was dubbed “near perfect” by Patrick in the made-to-measure challenge. He said: “It really feels like a Teamgb tracksuit.

“We have got these really bold chevrons down the front and they are pretty near perfect.”

Esme Young told Brogan: “The fit is great. The sleeves are a little bit short, but great on the shoulders. It looks super sporty, it’s terrific.”

Brogan says her sewing journey began when she watched the first series of the Great British Sewing Bee when she was a teenager.

When she was 15-years-old, Brogan received a sewing machine for Christmas and taught herself to sew using Youtube tutorials.

She can next be seen in Wednesday’s episode.
