First-class outing by Harry in Uni Champs

BURTON athlete Harry Handsaker equalled his personal best 100m time of 10.91 at the British Universiti­es & Colleges Athletics Championsh­ips in Chelmsford.

Continuing his fine early season form, he finished third in his heat and qualified for the semi-finals.

Representi­ng Sheffield Hallam University, he is now close to setting another impressive personal best after battling injuries for the last few seasons.

The Uttoxeter running festival saw a lot of success for the young endurance squad.

The 10k road race was open to those over 16 and Owen Morgan and Paige Barker took on the challenge for the first time.

Morgan, from Uttoxeter, has trained over some of the course and he was soon up with the leaders.

A fine debut saw him finish second in 38.00, just outside Jack Shorten’s under-17 club record, winning the junior race.

In a strong female field, Barker was sixth in 45.06, winning the junior race and setting a club record.

The 2k junior fun run saw Burton’s Uttoxeter contingent out in force. Rhys Morgan won the race outright, taking the under-15 trophy.

Caitlin Mccarney was third but first female, winning the under-15 trophy. She was followed by sister Cara, who took the under-17 trophy and brother Calum, who took the under-13 trophy for a family treble.

Callum Morgan ran well for eighth.

Burton got started in the Veterans’ League with the first of three home matches at Shobnall on a cold evening.

Paul Edwards made his Burton debut in the league in the M60 100m and was fourth in 14.8.

It was Judy Kelsall’s last race in the W60 age group and she cruised to victory in 18.7.

Tom Farr, in the M70s, was another right at the top of the age group and he was second in 22.8.

It was then fourth all round for Rob Cawson (M50, 15.7), Tomasz Kolodziej (M40, 13.9) and Jack Poxon (M35, 13.3).

lair Zawada competed in her first track race for more than 20 years and made a fast start in the W40 race. She held on to win in 15.5 and equalled the club record, running into a strong headwind. Nicola Long took sixth in 27.7.

The 400m saw Jonathan Dumelow fourth at M35 in 60.1, Tomasz Kolodziej third in the M40 in 66.1 and Paul Mellor, on his debut in M50, third in 67.9. In the W35, Laura Allen was fifth in 95.0 on her debut.

The walk saw Kelsall in a close battle. She finished second in 14.56.0, while Farr was third in 16.51.3.

Overall, Burton finished third in the men’s competitio­n behind winners Cannock & Staffs, fourth in the women’s and third in the combined scoring.
