Bannan: I intend to give it a go again

-

SHEFFIELD Wednesday captain Barry Bannan says he intends to stay and have another crack at League One promotion after the Owls lost 2-1 on aggregate to Sunderland in the play-off semifinals.

The Black Cats will meet Wycvombe Wanderers, conquerors of MK Dons, in the final for a place in the Championship.

At 32, Bannan has played more than 300 games for Wednesday club since signing in 2015 and was outstanding in both of their wins over Burton Albion this season.

“I’ve got unfinished business. I see myself being back here next season,” he told Radio Sheffield.

“I wanted to get promoted and it hasn’t happened. I wanted to lift the trophy as the captain and that is what I will continue to do while I am here.

“I’m gutted, it’s hard to describe how I’m feeling.

“It’ll be a long hard summer but we’ve just got to brush it off and come back next season and give it another go.”

Bannan twice lost in the Championship play-offs with Wednesday before they were relegated last season.

“There’s a lot of good teams in this league and Sunderland might not go up – they’ve still got a final to win,” said Bannan.

“There’s no excuse though. We should have got promoted and we haven’t.

“We came up short. We should have done better in the season because we lost a lot of points and threw a lot of points away.

“It’s not

(defeat to Sunderland) that has killed us, it’s midway through the season with all of those dropped points.”
