FGR fume as boss is set to join Watford

-

FOREST Green Rovers, newlypromoted to League One after winning the League Two title, have hit out at their manager, Rob Edwards, who is leaving the club and looks set to be appointed by Watford.

Watford were relegated to the Championship and former England manager Roy Hodgson’s short-term role with the club is not continuing.

In announcing the departure of Edwards, Rover took an angry swipe at him and his prospective new employers.

Edwards won League Two with FGR in his first season in charge after previously working as the England Under-16 coach.

“We can confirm the departure of head coach Rob Edwards,” said Forest Green in a statement.

“Rob was a key part of the team that gained promotion to League One this season.

“We’re disappointed that our support, loyalty and honesty towards Rob has been repaid in this way – with negotiations taking place behind our backs.

“We had no contact from Watford, from whom we might expect less, but in any event this kind of behaviour gives football a bad name.

“We thank Rob for all his work at FGR, forgive him the manner of his departure and wish him well.”

FGR owner Dale Vince went a little further in an interview with Sky Sports News, saying: “He’s not our manager any more. I feel disappointed with him, let down. Watford encouraged him not to tell us. We move on.

“I called him last night and as soon as he started speaking I knew this was real.”
